Exam Portions by Grade Level

MATHCOUNTS does not have a fixed syllabus but covers topics typically found in middle school math, including:

  • Grade 6: Arithmetic, fractions, decimals, percentages, basic algebra, simple geometry.
  • Grade 7: Ratios, proportions, probability, statistics, linear equations, advanced geometry.
  • Grade 8: Quadratic equations, polynomials, combinatorics, coordinate geometry, number theory.

Marks Distribution

Each round is scored differently:

Sprint Round

  • No.of ques: 30
  • Time: 40 minutes
  • Total points: 1 point each
  • Calculator: Not permitted

Target Round: 

  • No.of ques: 8 questions (divided into four pairs)
  • Time: 24 minutes
  • Total points: 2 points each
  • Calculator: Permitted

Team Round: 

  • No.of ques: 10 questions 
  • Time: 20 minutes
  • Total points: 0nly the team’s final answers count, with a maximum of 10 points.
  • Calculator: Permitted

Countdown Round:

  • No.of Questions: Varies; minimum of 3 questions per matchup, but additional questions may be needed in case of a tie. The total number depends on the number of participants and matchups.
  • Total Time: Each question has a 45-second limit. The total time depends on the number of questions and matchups.
  • Total Points: No fixed total points; each correct answer earns 1 point, and the competition continues until a winner is determined.
  • Calculator: Not permitted.

Scoring

  • The maximum individual score is 46 points (Sprint + Target rounds).
  • The maximum possible Team Score is ((46 + 46 + 46 + 46) ÷ 4) + 2(10) = 66.
  • Individual Tiebreaker: Higher Sprint Round score wins; if still tied, specific questions are compared.
  • Team Tiebreaker: Higher Team Round score wins; if still tied, the sum of team members’ Sprint Round scores is compared, followed by specific Team Round questions.

Passing Percentage and Advancement Criteria

There is no fixed passing percentage, but advancement depends on:

  • School to Chapter: Top-performing students from each school qualify.
  • Chapter to State: The top individuals and teams from each chapter advance (varies by state and region).
  • State to Nationals: The top 4 individuals from each state qualify for the national competition.
  • National Round: The top scorers compete for scholarships and national recognition.
